To help all potential students make an informed choice about coming to LSE, the Student Recruitment Office organises visits by academics and administrative members of staff to UK and overseas events, runs two Open Days and arranges campus tours.
LSE visits you
LSE representatives regularly visit a range of countries in North and South America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and in Europe. During these visits we attend various events including education fairs and conventions, school, college and university visits, promotional events and meet students for presentations, receptions and counselling sessions.
In the UK, we attend UCAS Education Conventions in all parts of the country, along with individual school and college visits and other education events.
LSE Open Days
LSE offers two open days a year for prospective undergraduates to visit the School, sample its unique atmosphere and meet members of our academic staff together with our current students. For 2008, the dates are as follows:
If you cannot attend the Open Day, you can come along to a campus tour. The tours last approximately 30 minutes and are led by a student guide. Visitors are not required to book, they should just arrive at the Student Services Centre at LSE at 3pm on their chosen date, where they will be met by a Student Ambassador. Campus tours will take place at 3pm on the following dates:
Monday, 18 February 2008 Wednesday, 20 February 2008 Friday, 22 February 2008 Wednesday, 28 May 2008 Friday, 30 May 2008

LSE encourages applications from all students with the very best academic potential, irrespective of their background. The School has, therefore, been involved with a number of widening participation and access initiatives since 1998, with the aim of raising the aspirations of school and college students, both to higher education in general and to come and study at LSE. Current activities, some of which are generously funded by external agencies and donors, involve students from year 6 to year 13 in a range of interactive projects including mentoring, visits to LSE and school based workshops. All projects are developed and supported by LSE academic staff in collaboration with school and college staff and Aimhigher coordinators.
The following list of activities, while not exhaustive, includes some examples of current opportunities.
Student Shadowing scheme
In January 2001 LSE launched its Student Shadowing scheme. This scheme is for sixth form students from state schools or colleges who are seriously considering applying or have already applied to LSE. Once you have decided upon a particular course or area of study you are matched with a current LSE student and invited to spend a morning or afternoon on campus.
Student Tutoring
LSE students also have an important role to play in widening participation in the LSE Student Tutoring scheme. Through this scheme LSE student tutors support teachers in over 40 primary and secondary schools in London.
The scheme is firmly embedded in LSE student life and all LSE departments are involved. Student tutors are able to encourage school pupils to aim for higher education by acting as friendly role models in the classroom.
Summer Schools
Summer Schools are organised for year 11 students from London schools and colleges. Aimed at raising both aspiration and achievement, these schools are designed in close collaboration with LSE lecturers.
Students attend lectures, classes and seminars which reflect their subject interests, experiencing higher education from the inside, and receive guidance on UCAS applications, careers and key skills. Support is given to students to enable them to improve their grades and feel confident about applying to LSE and similar universities.
LSE Choice
Supported by the Sutton Trust and the Goldman Sachs Foundation, LSE CHOICE is a programme of Saturday morning sessions, and a Summer School designed to give talented young people from London state schools the tools to successfully apply to competitive universities.
Further information about LSE's widening participation activities can be found on the Student Recruitment Office web pages at www.lse.ac.uk/studentRecruitment.
