The University of London External System allows students from anywhere in the world to complete their qualifications through independent study. Students can choose from a range of degrees and diplomas in economics, management, finance, social science and information systems, each developed by LSE academics and awarded by the University of London.
Students can study independently with the aid of the materials provided by LSE and the University of London and/or receive additional support by attending one of the many institutions around the world that offer tuition.
The programmes of study are subject to the same rigorous academic standards that shape LSE's internal qualifications. LSE academics write syllabuses, create learning materials, and set and mark examinations to the same standards applied internally.

Students have between three and eight years to complete the degrees through the standard route.
There are two programmes for students with a first degree: a BSc Graduate Entry Route – a nine unit undergraduate degree; and a Diploma for Graduates. The graduate entry degree is available to students who wish to take a second degree to improve their career prospects or focus on another discipline. For most of the degrees, it can be taken full-time in (a minimum of) two years.
The diploma for graduates allows students to take four units and they have between one and five years to complete the programme. This programme appeals to students who need to top up their qualifications in order to be accepted on to a master's programme, or to demonstrate a particular skill to prospective employers. It will also be of interest to students who wish to study at postgraduate level in a field unrelated to their first degree.
In addition to the degrees listed above, the Diploma in Economics and the Diploma in Social Sciences are qualifications for students who have the ability, motivation and potential to study at degree level, but who may not have the necessary formal entrance requirements. Students who successfully complete the Diploma can transfer to a degree and complete in a further two years. These Diplomas are only available in institutions granted permission to admit students on to these programmes.
For those who do not live near an institution offering the Diploma in Economics or the Diploma in Social Sciences, or for those who are under 18, the Access route enables students to gain entry to a degree by taking and passing two units. Students can study alone or at a teaching institution and go on to complete a degree in a further three years.
LSE accepts applications from students of the External Programme for second year entry to complete their undergraduate degrees. However, applicants should be aware that competition for admisssion to LSE is intense and should refer to the section 'Direct entry to second year'. To be considered, students will need to have achieved or be predicted high marks in the Diploma in Economics, the Diploma in Social Sciences or the first four full foundation units of one of the degrees; having studied syllabuses similar to those taken by internal students. Those interested in applying should do so via UCAS (www.ucas.com), indicating that they are applying for second year entry. Please see the How to apply section for further information.
The parity of standards between the degrees studied by internal and external students is illustrated by the success of external students who are accepted to study at LSE either in the second year of an undergraduate degree or at master's level. A number of other universities will accept external students into the second year at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

The General Course offers students from overseas universities the opportunity to spend a fully integrated year of undergraduate study at LSE.
General Course students will normally have a GPA in excess of 3.3/4, or the equivalent, and will have completed two years of university level study at an institution outside the UK by the time of their enrolment at the School. Those admitted are attached to one of 19 academic departments and take four year-long courses chosen from more than 300 available. Students attend lectures and classes with degree seeking students, have a personal tutor, and take the undergraduate examinations at the end of the academic year. In addition, General Course students enjoy a bespoke social calendar, may attend any LSE lecture course and have full use of the Library and all student social, health and welfare facilities. Please note that LSE does not offer any semester study options.
Applications are considered from February onwards in the year of entry and continue to be accepted until all the available places have been filled. If you have any questions, or need application material, you are encouraged to contact the Student Recruitment Office:
