LSE Pay Framework
In August 2006 the School implemented the new LSE Pay Framework in accordance with the national Framework Agreement for the Modernisation of Pay Structures.
The LSE Pay Framework:
- Implemented a single spine for all staff groups, which has regular 3 per cent increments;
- Better ensures equal pay for work of equal value across all staff groups;
- Harmonised other non-pay terms and conditions (eg holiday, working hours, maternity pay and sick pay).
The LSE spine consists of 71 increments, each divided into two steps. The spine has ten salary bands. Most salary bands (up to Salary Band 8/Senior Lecturer) have a Standard Range, through which each member of staff progresses automatically until they reach a Standard Maximum, and a further Contribution Range, through which staff may progress on the basis of recommendation from their Head of Department/manager. Progression at Salary Band 9/Reader and Salary Band 10/Professor is entirely contribution-based.
Automatic increments are processed on 1 August for all staff groups. (Staff with fewer than 6 months service in their current salary band receive half an increment, ie one step.)
Generally the implementation of the new spine delivered significant increases in career earnings for academic and support staff (both existing and new staff). However, to ensure staff in post before 1 August 2006 do not suffer any short-term detriment from moving across to the new spine, those staff employed in their current post and salary band prior to 1 August 2006 have certain additional protected progression rights:
- Existing staff in Salary Band 6/Research Officer skip Steps 27.5 and 28.0;
- Existing staff in Salary Band 7/Lecturer/Research Fellow skip Steps 35.0 and 36.5.
The School is currently in the final year of the three-year 2006-2009 Higher Education pay deal, which is worth 13.1 per cent (excluding incremental awards) by October 2008. The final stage of the pay award which takes effects from 1 October 2008 will uprate the scale by at least 2.5 per cent but the increase will be equivalent to Retail Price Index in September 2008 if this is higher.
Human Resources distributed the Schools new updated terms and conditions booklets to all salaried staff in September 2006. A further update is currently being negotiated for issue in the 2008/09 session.
During 2008, Human Resources have been discussing outstanding issues related to the national Framework Agreement, such as criteria for contribution pay, conducting an equal pay audit and reviewing pay and conditions of Guest Teachers and Graduate Teaching Assistants.
