Summary
Census publications and other sources of demographic statistics form one of the core sections of the official statistics collection. As with other categories of statistics, holdings are most comprehensive for the UK, other major English-speaking countries, and Western Europe. However other areas are well covered for historical data, for instance South and Central America, and many smaller countries throughout the world are represented by their censuses when little else is held. There are also comprehensive holdings of demographic statistics published by major intergovernmental organisations such as the United Nations, the European Union, and the World Bank

United Kingdom - current sources
A very comprehensive range of current demographic publications is held for the UK, principally the 10-yearly census publications. From 1991 at Current Statistics Collection 42 (HA161) the Library holds summary reports for the whole of the UK, the long sequence of County reports, reports on special topics such as Sex, age and marital status, Housing and availability of cars, Ethnic group and country of birth and Economic activity, and summaries of key statistics in various areas, e.g. Key statistics for local authorities and Key statistics for urban and rural areas with a separate volume for each region. A similar range is held for 1981 at the same location, and other comparatively recent censuses at Historical Statistics Collection 42 (HA161). From 1910 the census for Scotland is shelved separately at Historical Statistics Collection/Current Statistics Collection 41 (HA161), and that for Northern Ireland at Historical Statistics Collection/Current Statistics Collection 416 (HA161), while Wales has always been included in the main UK census. Censuses for Crown dependencies such as the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands will also be found at separate locations for some periods, e.g. the Isle of Man 5-yearly from 1966 to 1981 at Historical Statistics Collection/Current Statistics Collection 4289 (HA161), and Jersey for 1971 and 1976 at Historical Statistics Collection/Current Statistics Collection 4234 J (HA161)
In addition to the census material, all the main official series containing demographic statistics will be found at the same location, with issues more than 10 years old normally at Historical Statistics Collection 42 (HA161), or alternatively at Government Publications locations recorded in the online catalogue. These include Birth statistics, Mortality statistics and Abortion statistics all from 1974, Population projections 1970-, Population trends 1975-, and Key population and vital statistics 1986-. As well as periodicals containing demographic data or projections, numerous useful monograph publications will also be found in this section, for instance Birth counts : statistics of pregnancy and childbirth 1984 by Alison Macfarlane and Miranda Mugford, Occupational mortality : the Registrar General's decennial supplement for Great Britain, 1979-80, 1982-83, and English life tables no. 14 from 1987

Intergovernmental organisations
Apart from the population censuses and other demographic data published by national governments throughout the world, the Library has comprehensive holdings of statistics in this field produced by the major intergovernmental organisations. Located in the main Intergovernmental Organisations section at WFS (1) onwards, rather than the statistics section, are a number of useful publications of the World Fertility Survey, especially its series of comparative studies such as Infant and child mortality : levels, trends and demographic differentials by Shea Oscar Rutstein from 1983, and Birth intervals by John Hobcraft, and John McDonald from 1984. In the Statistics Collections we have the United Nations Demographic yearbook from 1949 at Historical Statistics Collection/Current Statistics Collection UN (HA161) with statistical tables covering all member countries, and a number of more specialised monograph publications in this field. These include the Global report on human settlements from 1987, World urbanization prospects 1990 from 1991, and Long-range world population projections : two centuries of population growth, 1950-2150 from 1992, all at Current Statistics Collection UN (HA161). For the member countries of the European Union demographic statistics will be found at Historical Statistics Collection/Current Statistics Collection EC (HA161), or occasionally for older material at Intergovernmental Organisations locations recorded in the online catalogue. The main serial publications in this area are Demographic statistics from 1970/76 onwards, The demographic situation of the European Union 1995-, Migration statistics 1994-, and Statistics in focus : population and social conditions 1995-. Useful monograph publications include Atlas of agglomerations in the European Union from 1994, and Demographic and labour force analysis from 1988
