Frequently asked questions - building work inside and outside the Library
Work on the Plaza began on 30 June 2008 and is on schedule to finish by late November 2008. Material held directly under the Plaza was moved to an external store in June and will be moved back when the building work is finished.

Yes. Opening hours will be maintained as normal, except access to items to be fetched from closed access, which will be stored at another location and therefore take longer to fetch. Until Sunday 23 November, please use the alternative exit route which is clearly marked. From Monday 24 November, the main glass doors will be used for both entrance and exit, and the alternative exit route will be closed.

All areas are accessible except for 3 weeks in early December (exact dates to be confirmed) when items usually stored below the Plaza area are moved back from an external store. During the book moves, some PC and study desks will be unavailable and study rooms R021-R025 will be closed. These will be clearly marked. All items will remain accessible during the book moves via a reduced fetch service.

There will inevitably be some noise and disruption in the areas overlooking the Plaza area. We recommend you use the study spaces on the upper floors for quiet study.

All material held both in closed access and in open access underneath the Plaza is being stored externally. This material will continue to be available, however there will be a reduced next day fetch service, delivered Monday to Friday only - items must be requested by 5pm on the day before delivery.
An online fetch form is available via the Library Catalogue for LSE staff and students. Visitors who have not yet registered can place requests in advance of their visit via a special instruction on the Library Catalogue (click on Fetch and use the email address displayed on the flash page).

Notices in the Library and on the website will give information about the location of services and any areas which are affected by the building works.

The project outside the Library on the Plaza area will resolve some problems with flooding into the Library basement area, which houses 200,000 volumes of Library material and will help to safeguard the research collections.
