Search by Subjects

Sometimes you will just want to search for items on a particular subject. You can do this using a Subject search, which is a search for subject headings. A subject search will look through an index of subject headings to find the publications that match your search terms.

Note

Subject headings are terms which describe the subject content of a publication. They are added to the Catalogue record by librarians, using a common international glossary.

You can browse by subjects or you can search for them using keywords.

A Subject search only looks for the subject headings added to the Catalogue records by Library staff, and won’t take account of the title or any other notes in the record. To use it effectively, you need to know the correct subject heading to search for.

Subject headings also include people, organizations and places.

Tip

To find out the correct subject heading before doing a subject search, try a simple Search Everything search. Then look at the Subject(s) links in the Bibliographic Records for any items that are relevant to your topic.
