Borrowing for LSE students and staff

Overall borrowing allowance

  • Course students: 20 items (undergraduate and taught course postgraduate students)
  • Research students: 30 items (M Phil and PHD students)
  • Staff: 40 items

A combination of certain amounts of the following materials may be borrowed totalling 20, 30 or 40 as above.

To renew your loans, please renew them online using the Self-Service option on the Library's online catalogue (you will need your Library card number and PIN). If you do not have access to a computer please telephone 020-7955 7229 (Monday-Friday, 9.00-17.00) .

Please note that renewals and further borrowing is not possible if a user has accumulated £10 or more in fines on their account.

Course Collection

The Course Collection contains books that are cited on LSE course reading lists.

One week loans

(red labels or red strips)

Up to 6 one week loans may be borrowed at one time.
One week loans may be renewed, unless a hold has been placed by another user.

A fine of 30p per day is charged on overdue one week loans.

Three day loans

(blue labels or blue strips)

Up to 6 three day loans may be borrowed at one time.
Full-time students: 3 days, Part-time students: 1 week.
A three day loan may be renewed, unless a hold has been placed by another user.

A fine of 50p per day is charged on overdue three day loans.

Set texts

(orange labels or orange strips)

These are textbooks which are in high demand.
Up to three set texts may be borrowed at one time
Set texts must be returned within 24 hours of the time of issue.
Items cannot be renewed of reissued.
Holds cannot be placed on set texts.

A fine of 50p per hour is charged on overdue Set Texts.

Main Collection

Normal loans

(white labels)

Course students: 3 week loan.
Staff and Research students: 105 day loan.

A fine of 30p per day is charged on overdue normal loans.

Recommended texts

(yellow labels or yellow strips)

These are books recommended as background reading on LSE course reading lists
and are 1 week loans.

A fine of 30p per day is charged on overdue recommended texts.
