Finding journal articles
LSE staff and students are able to access journal articles from many thousands of print and electronic journal titles. Here are some tips on finding material for your research.
Can I search for journal articles on the Library catalogue? Are all the journal articles available electronically? How can I trace print journal articles? How can I find indexing services? How can I get further help?
The Library catalogue does not provide references to individual journal articles. If you want to find articles by specific authors or about specific subjects you will need to use a combination of full text electronic journal databases and indexing and abstracting services which can be accessed via the Electronic Resources Pages
Many recent journal articles can be accessed in full text from our ejournal databases. A list of these and information on how to use them can be found on our Journals Portal . However, there remain a large number of titles (including foreign language and older materials) which only exist in print copy. Therefore it is good practice to also use journal indexes and abstracts even though this may cause some duplication of results
Try using our specialist journal indexing and abstracting services. These provide references and often abstracts (succinct summaries) of individual articles. Once you have a list of results, note down the titles of the journals in which the articles were published and check them against the LSE Library catalogue and A-Z listing of electronic journals. Two good general social science indexing services are International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS) and the Web of Knowledge. You will find further examples of specialist subject based indexing services via the Electronic Resources Pages.
