Introduction to the Data Library

What's in the Data Library?

The Data Library provides an advisory service, helping to locate, access and interpret quantitative data.

With over 600 social science data resources, the Data Library is a unique source for high quality research. Our collections include:

Microdata, consisting of about 400 datasets from 200 different studies. It includes large scale government surveys such as the General Household Survey, longitudinal data collections including the British Cohort Study and opinion polls such as the Eurobarometer collection.

Aggregated data, with around 30 databases providing socio-economic indicators worldwide from organizations such as IMF, World Bank, EUROSTAT, United Nations and OECD.

Financial databases, with seven services including Datastream, FAME and AMADEUS. Information on company accounts, markets, exchange rates.

Geographic information systems, GIS, Electronic maps covering UK boundaries, Ordnance Survey map data, UK and EU administrative regions.

Who can use the Data Library?

The service is for members of LSE and is aimed at PhD students, contract researchers and academic staff. Masters students often find Data Library resources applicable to their dissertations, but please be aware of the complexities in using data of this kind.

Are there restrictions to using the data?

Provided the data are for academic research only, and you are a member of LSE, the Data Librarian can arrange direct online access to any of the data currently held either locally or from outside services. In most cases, you will simply need to sign a form and provide summary details of your research.

Are there charges to access the resources?

Generally no, although externally-funded research projects may incur a charge.

Electronic versions of all associated documentation are disseminated at no cost, but there may be a charge if paper versions are required.

What about hardware and software?

All resources are compatible with licensed School analysis software. The vast majority of data are held in a transferable format such as SPSS portable, allowing easy conversion to other software packages (such as SAS, Stata or Excel using STAT/Transfer).

Is there any paper dataset documentation?

Some paper documentation can be found in the Library’s Reference Collection on the First floor. The classmark for all Data Library material is ZHA155 D10. Other documentation is held by the Data Librarian.

Where can I go next within this website?

The Electronic Library is our main access point to general electronic resources. Datasets has its own folder with all the different resources available.

The Data Librarian is happy to provide further information on Data Library resources and services. Please get in touch if you are thinking of using data in your research or would like to keep up to date with developments.
