Wired network connection on the LSE Campus
Introduction
LSE provide laptop plug-in points on campus on the Lower Ground, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors of the Library.
To access the schools IT facilities you must have one of the following:
To gain full access to the LSE network and external Internet, users are required to log on to a secure web page with their computer as described below, and to install and regularly update anti-virus software.
You will require an RJ45 Ethernet cable (straight, not crossover) which can be purchased in the Student Union shop, C120 vending machine or most high street electronics retailers.
Connecting to the Network:
1. Connect the cable and adaptor to a working network point. (Note: For Windows computers the ‘Local Area Network unplugged’ icon should disappear from the system tray.)
2. Test your connection using your Internet browser by opening the LSE web site at http://www.lse.ac.uk.
3. You will be redirected to a secure logon page at https://bluesocket2.lse.ac.uk. Click the
Yes button on the Security Alert Dialog to accept the security certificate.
4. If necessary, click the Yes button on the Security Information Dialog to display all items.
5. For full Internet access log on as a Registered User in the top left hand corner using your LSE username and password, or JANET roaming login details as provided by your home institution.
Troubleshooting
Most computers are configured to join a Local Area Network by default, but should you experience problems due to broadband or dial-up settings Microsoft Windows XP users should check Internet Option Connection settings.
1. Click Start | (Settings) | Control Panel
2. Double click Internet Options
3. Select Connections tab
4. Select Dial whenever a network connection is not present
5. Click LAN Settings
6. Tick Automatically detect settings
7. Untick any other options
If you receive a 'Duplicate name exists on the network' error, Microsoft Windows 2000/XP users should change the computer name.
To change the computer name:
1. Log on as an Administrator if necessary
2. Click Start | Control Panel | System
3. Select Computer Name tab
4. Click Change
5. Enter T-USERNAME as your computer name (your LSE network username)
6. Click OK
7. Restart your computer
