How to become a volunteer

This is an easy step-by-step guide to becoming an LSE VC volunteer. There are two types of projects; placement projects with external organisations, or the chance to set up your own project by becoming an LSE VC Project Leader.

For a placement project with an external organisation

  1. You must be a current student or member of staff at LSE.

  2. Register as an LSE VC volunteer using the Volunteer registration form. This means you will be added to our database and will receive email updates about new projects, events and other news from the LSE VC.

  3. We are in the process of switching systems of how we advertise volunteering opportunities, so it’s a little bit confusing – please read this section carefully. There are two places where you can find out about current opportunities:

    1. Browse the Current projects section of this website to see if there are any that you want to find out more about. Then email the Volunteer Centre at volunteer@lse.ac.uk with the Project ID numbers of the roles you are interested in. The volunteer coordinator will then email you back with more detailed task descriptions. Look through the task descriptions and decide which project you would like to apply for. You can then contact the organisation with which you wish to apply (contact information is listed on the task description) and make the necessary arrangements.

    2. We are integrating with the Careers Service online vacancy board, which can be found under ‘My Careers Service’. Go to ‘Search for opportunities’ and scroll down until you see ‘Volunteering’ under ‘Opportunity Type’. You will then be able to see a range of opportunities advertised by the organisations we work with. When you click on each position, it will give you details about the volunteer role entails and information as how to apply.

  4. Please keep the LSE VC informed of your progress and let us know if there is anything else we can do to help you! If you end up volunteering – let us know! If you don’t – also let us know! Maybe there is something we could do help you out. If you feel that you don’t have enough time to make a regular commitment, email about upcoming one-off events!

  5. When you start volunteering, make sure you keep track of your hours. One way to do this is to complete a Time-Sheet, which is also available at the back of our Volunteer Handbook
