We have asked some LSE Students to give their top tips for your first few weeks at the School.

1. Go to Freshers' Fair

Make sure you go to Freshers' Fair to check out all the different sports clubs and societies you can join. This is a great way of meeting new people outside of your department.

2. Go to lectures

Do attend the lectures! These are not compulsory, but will form the basis for exams. Contribute to class too, it’s worth it in the end.

3. Choosing your course

When deciding what course options to pick, go to at least the first two lectures of all the courses that you’re interested in before making your choice. Also ask your student mentor about the options to get some inside knowledge.

4. Get organised

During lectures and seminars you will be writing notes and given lots of paper, so make sure from the start you organise and file your work for each module into the topics/themes covered. Then when you come to revise at the end of the year all your work will be in order, and it will make revising a lot easier.

5. Budget well

Budget your finances by keeping a record of how much you spend in the first few weeks, as it’s easy to overspend especially at the beginning of term, then budget accordingly for the rest of the year.

6. Go to LSE Events

LSE frequently attracts many high profile speakers, so keep an eye out for the Events section of the website, or pick up a brochure from the Student Services Centre.

7. Keep a diary

You don’t have to do it religiously, but jotting down things you’ve done not only helps you plan, but it’s a good keep sake as you’ll do so much in your university years, you won't remember what you did.

8. Meet up with your Student Mentor

They will be able to give you good advice and share their experience of their first few weeks at LSE with you. (Your student mentor will email you during induction week to invite you to meet up with them).

9. Travel

For those of you who will be using the underground or bus network frequently, don't forget to pick up a TFL student photo card from the Students' Union. This will give you a 30 % discount on travel in London.

10. Enjoy it

Most importantly enjoy your time here. Don’t think of it as three more years of study. The LSE experience opens so many opportunities academically and socially. Join society committees, check out the SU, the Careers Service, the Volunteering Centre – who knows, you might discover something new about yourself.
