Airey Neave Trust - Refugee Support

The trust gives grants to those with refugee status or exceptional leave to remain in the United Kingdom and a letter from the Home Office to prove it. Exclusions: asylum seekers, refugees with asylum status in countries other than Britain, overseas students in the UK on a student visa, British citizens or refugees now holding British citizenship.

Applicants wishing to do a full time BA or BSc degree course should wait until they are eligible for a grant from their Local Education Authority, because of the difficulty in finding money for three years of study. The average grant award is £1500 towards tuition fees.

Applicants should apply in March for the following October and must be interviewed on the telephone by Mrs Hannah Scott (020 7833 4440) in order that their command of English may be assessed as well as their eligibility before application forms are sent out. No new applicants are considered after the 1st of May.

British Federation of Women Graduates (BFWG):

National Awards 2008/09 and International Awards 2009/10

These awards are available for female students of any nationality in their final year of formal study towards a PhD degree.

Central European University Fellowship Programme

Each academic year, the Central European University, a US degree awarding institution of post-graduate study and research located in Central Europe (Budapest and Warsaw) awards 700 tuition and stipend packages in the form of a full CEU fellowship or partial financial aid. Churches Commission for International Students

Assistance is only given to students who are currently enrolled on a programme of study, and not to prospective students.

This Hardship Fund was sent up in 1990 by the Churches to assist international students, irrespective of their race, sex or religion, who face unexpected financial problems during the final stages of their degree course. Awards are normally made to those who can clearly show that a small grant will enable them to complete their course, normally those who are within six months of finishing.

Please note that decisions on grants are made three times a year, normally in March, June, September and December.

You are unlikely to be considered for such an award if you are i) a permanent resident of the UK, EU or other developed countries; ii) an asylum seeker or refugee; iii) already financed by a major award.

DAAD Scholarships 2008/09

Are you interested in studying or carrying out research at a German university?
DAAD (Deutscher Akadmischer Austausch Dienst/German Academic Exchange Service), a private, publicly funded, self governing organisation of higher education institutions in Germany offer funding for study and research in Germany. Grants are available for all academic levels of study. DAAD grants are available to academic staff and students in the United Kingdom to participate in a wide variety of academic programmes. Applicants must normally be citizens of the UK and Ireland.

The Elizabeth Nuffield Educational Fund

This Fund makes grants towards the cost of childcare for women who are studying for qualifications to improve their employment prospects. The average grant is £1000 per annum.

To apply you will need to complete and application form which is avaliable from the ENEF website.

European Scholarship

The Evangelisches Studienwerk Villigst is a German protestant church foundation offering scholarships to European students studying in Germany. Eligible applicants should speak an advanced level of German. There are two closing dates for these on going scholarships: 1 March for winter terms; 1 September for summer terms.

Fulbright Awards Programme

The Fulbright Commission provides scholarships to US citizens who wish to study at Master's or Doctorate level at an educational institution in the UK, and to EU citizens, normally resident in the UK who wish to study at postgraduate level at an educational institution in the United States.

Foyer-UNIAID Accommodation Bursary Scheme

The Foyer-UNIAID Accommodation Bursary scheme is intended for students who would benefit most from an accommodation bursary, especially those who would otherwise be at risk of withdrawing from their studies. The scheme has been made possible by the generosity of UNITE, the UK’s largest student accommodation provider, and has grown this year to 60 places for the academic year 2008/09.

Funds for Women Graduates (FfWG) 2008/09

Funds for Women Graduates (FfWG) is a small educational charity who seek to promote the advancement of education and promotion of higher education and wider learning of women graduates. This is done in two ways:

  1. Grants to help women graduates who are in their final year of a PhD or D.Phil. The grants are available for living costs and have a maximum value of £4,000.
    Closing date: 14 May 2008
  2. Emergency Grants are available in March, June and October/November 2008 to graduate women who face a financial crisis with their living costs.Grants have a normal maximum of £1,500.

General Sir John Monash Awards

Annually up to eight awards will be made to outstanding Australians graduating from Australian universities to enable them to study abroad. The awards are available for study towards a PhD, or exceptionally, a professional masters.

Great Britain - China Educational Trust (GBCET)

This trust makes awards to British and Chinese students, studying at PhD level. Awards of up to £5000 are available. Only students who have completed the first year of their PhD programme are eligible to apply.

Instituto Ling Fellowship

This is an annual fellowship program for Brazilian citizens with entrepreneurial spirit and leadership skills to contribute to the Brazilian economic, social and cultural development. To be eligible applicants must have Brazilian citizenship and be able to demonstrate financial need. The fellowships can be used for full time MBA courses, and consist of a partial fellowship covering up to one third of the course costs. The fellowships are only available for the beginning of the second half of the course.

Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust Undergraduate Bursaries

These bursaries are available to students who are in financial need, resident in the UK, and have an immediate family member who is/was a commercial traveller, chemist or grocer.

The maximum value of any bursary is £3000 and this can be used for maintenance, tuition and examination fees, travel costs, study material, accommodation, childcare, etc.

Marjorie Dean Financial Journalism Foundation

The Foundation offers one or two studentships, worth roughly £10,000 each, to students who have been accepted to do a masters degree in Economics or Finance at a top British university. Preference will be given to applicants who can write well and who will produce a piece of research (probably based on their dissertation) that is suitable for publication.

NUFFIC are offering scholarships for students from a number of different nationalities to apply for funding to attend short courses in the Netherlands.

Overseas Development Institute (ODI) Fellowship Scheme

Each year the ODI Fellowship Scheme recruits up to 20 young postgraduate economists to work for two years in the public sectors of countries in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific.

  • an excellent degree and postgraduate qualifications in economics or an economics specialism (one of which must be from a British or an Irish university)
  • sound grasp of economic theory and its application
  • good communication skills
  • genuine interest in development
  • some work experience would be advantageous

Richard Reeve's Foundation

Richard Reeve's Foundation is an educational charity which helps individuals and families on low incomes towards the costs of education.

To be eligible to apply:

  • you must be under the age of 25
  • AND either you or your parents must have lived or worked for the last 12 months, or for at least two of the last ten years, in the London boroughs of Camden, Islington and the City of London.
  • OR you must be studying and have been enrolled in a school, college or university in the London Boroughs of Camden, Islington and the City of London for the last twelve months.

In exceptional cases, applications will be considered from students up to the age of 40. Applications from refugees with exceptional and indefinite leave to remain are welcome, provided they meet the above criteria.

Tohoku University - International Graduate Programme for Advanced Science (IGPAS) 2008

Wingate Scholarships are awarded to individuals of great potential or proven excellence who need financial support to undertake pioneering or original work of intellectual, scientific, artistic, social or environmental value.  The average total award is about £6,500 and the maximum in any one year is £10,000.
