Making an Appointment

Appointments can be made by email (student.counselling@lse.ac.uk), phone (020 7852 3627 or Ext 3627) or by coming in to our office (U600, Tower 1), which is open from Monday - Friday 9.45 - 5.00 throughout the year, apart from 'School closure' days (public holidays).

All students need to complete a confidential Registration Form in advance. To book an appointment by email, please complete the Registration Form, and then save it and email it to us as an attachment. If you are coming in to the office to book an appointment, you can also print and complete this form beforehand. Please also look at the Service confidentiality policy for information on confidentiality and data protection.

We aim to see all new clients as soon as possible, and hope to be able to arrange an initial appointment within one or two weeks, depending on how busy we are. We also we set aside a small number of half hour appointments at 4.00 pm, for new clients who feel they need to be seen urgently. This is not a drop-in service, and these sessions need to be booked on the same day; it is usually best if you contact us early in the day to book for an urgent appointment. Please note that these appointments are kept for people having urgent difficulties; if you feel you can wait to see a counsellor, please leave these sessions open to others in greater need.

Please let the receptionist know when you enter the office. Please arrive at least five minutes before the time of your first appointment.


Cancellations

If for any reason you are unable to keep an appointment, please contact reception (Ext 3627) as soon as possible to let us know. If you do not cancel your appointment, other students may be denied the opportunity of support when they most need it. It may also be some time before a new appointment can be arranged.

The first meeting

Sessions last 50 minute, and in the first meeting we will invite you to say what is worrying or troubling you. We would together look to work out what kind of help might be most useful and whether you need any further counselling sessions. There is no need to wait until a problem has grown very serious, as we would much rather you came when something is relatively minor, when it may be easier to resolve.

Most of the work that we do is short-term counselling. Many students find that one or two sessions are enough, although we do have a number of spaces for longer-term counselling. These may be limited at times, although your counsellor will be able to advise you about other sources of support if required, and can also refer you to outside agencies where necessary.
