The LSE only has limited opportunities for scholars of repute to visit the School. The School's regulations for such scholars are set out below. In the Department of Sociology, the Research Committee considers all applications for places for Academic Visitors and Research Scholars, and can only recommend affiliation to the School. We can only consider requests from individuals who are working in one of the research priority areas of the Department and who have a sponsor in the Department with whom they intend to work. If you wish to apply, you must first contact a potential sponsor and ask them to provide a letter of support. The application procedure requires you to complete a short form, supply a full CV and an outline of the programme of work you wish to undertake while at the School.
For the 2007-2008 academic session the Department of Sociology has a maximum of 4 places for Academic Visitors and 4 for Research Scholars. The Department regrets that it is currently unable to provide office space, administrative support or the use of a PC to academic visitors. Anyone applying for affiliation for any period in the 2007-08 academic session should do so before 1 January, 2008.
Academic Visitors The Department has spaces for up to 4 Academic Visitors per year. We can only consider requests from individuals who are working in one of the research priority areas of the Department and who have a sponsor in the Department with whom they intend to work. If you wish to apply, you must first contact a potential sponsor and ask them to provide a letter of support. You will need to complete the form 'Academic Visitor Application' available from the Sociology Department 'Public Folders' (your sponsor can access this), supply a full CV and an outline of the programme of work you wish to undertake while at the School. This material should be sent to the sponsor who will forward it with a sponsorship letter to the Departmental Director of Research for consideration.
Please read the information the School provides for applicants below.
School Guidelines
The status of Academic Visitor is given to visiting University teachers on the recommendation of the head of the appropriate. The status is intended to apply to Scholars who have already published work of distinction. Heads of departments are asked to put forward names in writing to the Deputy Director, Paul Johnson. They should indicate in their letter whether they or any other members of the department know the proposed visitor; whether they consider the visitor's presence will result in a substantial contribution to the academic work of the School; whether they are willing to accept general responsibility for the visitor; whether the Department is willing to provide space for the visitor. A CV should also be submitted.
Research Scholars The Department has space for up to 4 Research Scholars per year. We can only consider requests from individuals who are working in one of the research priority areas of the Department. In order to be considered for a place as a Research Scholar you should consult the following guidelines and complete the form 'Research Scholar Information and Application' (see link below), send a full CV and outline of research to the Chair of the Departmental Research Committee.
Please read carefully the School guidelines for Research Scholars below.
1. The status of Research Scholar at the School is open to a small number of visiting university teachers from overseas (at present there is a limit of 40 per session). The Research Scholar classification is intended to cater primarily for applicants for whom otherwise, in the view of the academic departments concerned, the most appropriate alternative form of registration would probably be as Visiting Research students.
2. There is a fee for Research Scholars, payable in full on arrival. The fee is £5,979 per session or £1,993 per term (or part thereof). Visits should not be of more than one session's duration.
3. Candidates for Research Scholar status must be: (a) teaching or research staff of overseas universities, or persons of equivalent standing in an appropriate profession or occupation; (b) normally of post-doctoral status and working in an area of particular interest to the department or from an institution with which the department has close links; (c) sponsored by one of the School's academic departments; (d) persons who, in the opinion of the academic department concerned, would appropriately be registered as Research Fee students, except where there is evidence that they do not require the supervision which is arranged for Research Fee students.
4. Research Scholars are entitled to use the Library on the same basis as Research Fee students. They may attend lectures and seminars (subject to any restriction noted in the School's Calendar, of which they will receive a copy upon registration), but they are not entitled to any individual supervision
5. The School is not normally able to offer Research Scholars any office space or secretarial assistance. Research Scholars are not normally admitted to temporary membership of the Senior Common Room, although if an academic department is willing to support it, application for membership may be made to the Chairman of the Senior Common Room Committee.
6. Prospective Research Scholars will normally be invited to complete an application form and, upon approval of their application, will be sent information as to a simple registration procedure to be followed on their arrival at the School.
Research Scholars from many countries outside the EU who receive financial support of any form, from a formal source of funding such as the government, university, research council, charitable organisation etc, to carry out research, will be required to have a Sponsored Research Work Permit to work at the School. Please contact your local British Consulate for details or see their website for further details.
Visiting Research Associates
The Department has space for up to 4 Visiting Research Associates per year. We can only consider requests from individuals who are working in one of the research priority areas of the Department. If you wish to apply, you must first contact a potential sponsor and ask them to provide a letter of support. In addition your sponsor can you should consult the following guidelines and complete the form 'Application for Visiting Research Associate' available from the Department of Sociology 'Public Folders' (your sponsor can access this), supply a full CV and an outline of the programme of work and send them to the Chair of the Departmental Research Committee.
Please read the information the School provides for applications.
School Guidelines
Applications for Visiting Research Associate status must be made, on behalf of the applicant, by the Convener or Centre/Institute Director where the applicant wishes to be based. Such status must be approved by Chair of Research Committee under Chair's action.
Applications should be sent, in the first instance, to Michael Oliver in the Research and Projects Development Division who administers the scheme. He will arrange necessary approval process and formally notify the parties, on behalf of the Chair of research Committee, of Institutional approval.
The application process is simply a signed letter from the head of Department, Centre/Institute Director, addressed to Chair of Research Committee, requesting the status of Visiting Research Associate for the applicant and confirming that all resources (including space) required for the tenure of the applicant would be provided by the Department/Centre/Institute. The applicant's CV should also be attached with the request.
The status of Visiting Research Associate is in itself non contractual and unremunerated, and confers no special privileges. It is intended solely as a vehicle to enable persons who are not part of the School's full time academic staff to apply for external research funding in their own name and using the School's name (this of course always being subject to the support of the Head of Department, Centre/Institute Director for the intended application). Applicants would be expected to raise their own salary by building this into the application.
Should an application be successful, with the applicant's salary and payroll costs built into the award, then the appointment process and issue of a School contract would be processed through the School's Human Resources Division, subject to the School's employment rules and regulations. The applicant's suitability for subsequent appointment to the senior research staff would be considered in the usual way by a School selection committee.
Visiting Research Status is approved initially for a fixed term (2/3 years) but extensions may be requested if desired by the Head of Department, Centre/Institute Director.
The Research and Projects Development Division must be consulted prior to any funding application being submitted by the Visiting Research Associate.
Visiting Research Students
The department welcomes applications for places as visiting research students. We have up to four visiting students at any one time. Applications require you to complete a preliminary form outlining your research areas and potential supervisors. Once completed the form should be sent to the Departmental Director of Doctoral Studies. You can download the form by following the links below. If your proposal is considered favourably, your registration will proceed in the usual fashion through the graduate admissions office.
School Guidelines Visiting Research Student (VRS) status allows research students at other universities to spend up to one academic session at the School at the discretion of the department concerned. A supervisor is assigned to every VRS, and you can take up to four full unit taught courses. Examinations are optional, and grades do not contribute towards a degree or diploma. A full transcript of studies can be produced at the end of the period of study. Other graduate students may also seek registration as a VRS to take graduate level courses without the commitment of registering for a degree programme.
See Visiting Students and Staff link in the Graduate Prospectus.
