LSE residences

Picture of Howard DaviesWelcome to your new home for the next year at the LSE.

LSE halls of residence are both communities in their own right and part of the wider School community of around 10,000 students and staff who work and study in the heart of London. I hope you will want to play a full role as a member of both communities.

It is impossible to provide really cheap accommodation in the centre of London, but our aim is that all our Halls should be good value, safe, clean, friendly and enjoyable places to live and study. Wardens and sub-wardens are there to support you with any academic or personal issues; the hall managers and their teams will help with any problems you experience with the accommodation or services, and the students' Hall Committee lead student activities, provide additional welfare support and formally represent halls on School Committees.

While you are with us, I hope you take the opportunity to experience as much as possible of what the LSE and London have to offer, over and above your academic study. The LSE is the premier social science institution in the world and will challenge you in your chosen subject area.

The School offers a wide range of public lectures and events with prominent speakers from around the globe; music concerts in the Shaw Library; Student societies covering every activity conceivable and a few that are not; the unique Thursday lunchtime UGM meeting of the Students' Union and Friday night Crush in the Student Union; events organised by academic departments; a gym, badminton and squash on site, swimming pool at the University of London Union, Sports Ground in New Malden: not to mention events organised at each Hall.

Outside the School, London offers many delights, even to those on a tight budget. Many museums and galleries are free, the open spaces and parks are on our doorstep, the cultural and entertainment facilities are incomparable, and it is easy to get around once you have conquered the mysteries of buses, the tube, walking or cycling.

Also, the LSE itself is a cosmopolitan community, and the opportunity of living and learning with people from all parts of the world and all walks of life is a vital part of the LSE experience. Many life long friendships will be developed.

Finally, a brief but necessary word about security. We do everything we can to provide a safe environment, but your vigilance will help. Please report any suspicious people or packages promptly. We have had no serious problems in our residences to date: we would like to keep it that way.

I hope you enjoy your time with us.
