MPhil/PhD students

In order to change from full-time to part-time registration course students must prove that they fulfil one of the following conditions:

  • employed or self-employed in London for at least 15 hours a week in normal office hours
  • registered as unemployed and over 25 years old
  • retired from regular employment
  • with children under school age or the main carer for an elderly or disabled person
  • a full-time member of staff of the School.

NB. Evening or weekend work will not be considered sufficient to allow part-time registration.

Proof of employment should normally be a copy of an employment contract or a letter from the student's employer addressed to Research Degrees Unit, LSE. The document should state the number of hours per week that the student is contracted to work and the duration of the employment

Students changing from part-time to full-time registration will obviously not need to fulfil any of these conditions.

Students who wish to change their mode of attendance should complete and sign the yellow form entitled Request to change from full-time to part-time (or part-time to full-time) (Word). Permission is required from the student's Supervisor who must also sign the form. Then the completed form should be returned to the Research Degrees Until, with, where applicable, the required proof.

Staff at the RDU will then process the change within 10 working days and provide students with details of the new dates via their LSE email address.

Please note:

  • You will not be allowed to stay in a Hall of Residence if you have changed from full-time to part-time study.

  • Please note that if you are from outside the European Union you will probably have to register as a full-time student because of the UK Government's Immigration Rules - see the UKCOSA web pages for more information.
