  • European Research Council (ERC): Starting Independent Researcher Grants - Information and Proposal Writing Events: The aim of each session is to provide participants with an overview of the ERC in the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), focusing on the Starting Grant scheme. More. [PDF]
     
  • European Research Council (ERC): Funding Opportunities in Framework Programme 7 (FP7): Two funding schemes form the core of the ERC's FP7 operations - ERC Starting Grants and ERC Advanced Grants. More. [PDF]
     
  • HEIF 4 Bid Fund: First Call for Bids. A new competitive funding source to support the School's efforts in knowledge transfer in social sciences. The fund is worth £1.4m for distribution over the next three academic years. More.
     
  • NHS: National Institute for Health Research. The NIHR Public Health Research Programme will be launched in Autumn 2008. The research is designed to improve the health of the public and reduce inequalities of health. Call for proposals will close January 2009. More.
     
  • AHRC: Important Changes to Research Grants Scheme. From January 2009 the AHRC will move to open deadlines for research grant applications (Standard, Speculative and Early Career routes). More.
     
  • DFID: New Research Strategy Launched. DFID's first substantive five-year strategy for research. The portfolio has been broadened, putting research on climate change and growth centre stage. More.
     
  • ESRC - Subscribe to the new ESRC Newsletter: This will be issued bi-monthly and will highlight funding opportunities, corporate news and other information of interest for the community. You need to be a registered user of ESRC Society Today before you can subscribe. More.
     
  • EPSRC - Digital Economy: the aim of the programme is to enable the early adoption of information technologies, generating societal and economic benefits. Combined research and training budget of £80m. More.
     
  • EPSRC - Centres for Doctoral Training - Digital Economy: Aimed at providing a capability in the early adoption of information technologies by businesses, government and society and focuses on the transformational effect that these technologies can have.   • Publicising your research - The School Press Office can help raise the profile of your work in the public eye both internally - through the website, New & Views and Briefing Online, and externally - by working with you to write a press release, arranging interviews with journalists, media training and targeting specific publications and organisations.   • Research Councils UK in China - Recently the Research Council in the UK established an office in Beijing. For further information please click here.
     
  • The Economic and Social Research Council is intensifying its efforts to support knowledge transfer and high impact research under its 2008-11 ESRC delivery plan. Grant applicants will now be required to show how they will "engage with users and to generate and demonstrate impact from the outset, throughout and following the whole research process" if their bids are to be successful.
