Great reformer Woolf welcomes proactive role for judges in the pursuit of justice
The civil procedure rules, or Woolf Reforms, were first introduced ten years ago with the intention of, among other aims, making the law more accessible. The reforms changed the focus of the judiciary as, until then, judges ‘sat back and decided the case almost exclusively on the basis of arguments put forward by the parties’, Lord Woolf told delegates at a London School of Economics lecture to mark the publication of his book, In Pursuit of Justice.
