LSE style guidelines

LSE's name and logo

Use of LSE's name and logo is carefully circumscribed. The name, variations on it and logo are all registered trademarks in the UK and overseas. If you are in any doubt about permitted use, please contact the Press and Information Office, tel 020 7955 7060, email pressoffice@lse.ac.uk

The correct title of the School is either LSE or The London School of Economics and Political Science. London School of Economics should not be used on its own as it does not reflect the breadth of the School's work and contributes to the view that LSE is only concerned with economics.

The logo is the School's main marketing and publicity symbol. Its use is controlled by the Press and Communications Division and it can only be used by LSE staff. Occasionally permission is given by the Press Office for other organisations to use the logo. It must never be reset, redrawn or altered and there are rules regarding minimum size and clear space around it. Guidelines for LSE staff on use of the logo and other internal and external logos are available at https://exchange.lse.ac.uk/public/LSE%20Website/resources/

Typefaces

The preferred typeface for text in printed School publications and materials is Frutiger.

If Frutiger is not available, Arial is an acceptable alternative.

Editorial guidelines

Copy preparation and proof-reading

These are the guidelines the School uses in producing its corporate publications. If you have not produced many publications before, the copy and proof-reading guidelines will help you. Click here for details on supplying copy to the designer, checking and correcting proofs and LSE publications' house style

Address and charitable status

When you are producing a publication the address of the School should appear in full, normally on the back cover, together with direct contact details. This should generally be telephone, fax number, web and email addresses.

To protect the School's legal position, the phrase 'The London School of Economics and Political Science is a School of the University of London. It is a charity and is incorporated in England as a company limited by guarantee under the Companies Acts (Reg no 70527)' must be incorporated in all School publications and on letterheads. This includes posters advertising events such as conferences which involve a fee to be paid to the School.

Equality statement

The School's equality statement should be incorporated in all publications:
'The School seeks to ensure that people are treated equitably, regardless of age, disability, race, nationality, ethnic or national origin, gender, religion, sexual orientation or personal circumstances.'

In addition, all publications must be made available in other formats if requested, and should include the phrase:
'This information can be made available in alternative formats, on request. Please contact: [contact name, telephone number, email of person/office responsible for the publication]

Templates

In response to requests from staff, templates are now available on the LSE website for commonly used stationery items, publication covers, posters/flyers and presentation slides. The templates, which are for LSE staff only, are available through access restricted links from the Design Unit website at www.lse.ac.uk/collections/designUnit/templates.htm

The templates are in Word and PowerPoint formats, together with example files in Acrobat PDF format which show how the completed templates may look. Using these standard formats will, we hope, save you time and effort, and will promote correct use of the School's logo and visual identity.

If you need advice on using the templates, or guidance on the design of materials not covered by the templates, please contact the Design Unit on 020 7955 7904 or email designunit@lse.ac.uk

Artwork for all School stationery, including headed paper, compliments slips and business cards, is prepared and printed by the Reprographics Unit
