Holiday
Annual leave, School closure days and public holidays
Following implementation of the 2006 LSE Pay Framework, the holiday entitlement for full-time members of staff is 25 days annual leave plus Christmas closure (five extra days in addition to normal English public holidays) and Easter closure (three extra days) plus public holidays (eight days per year) - 41 days' holiday in total.
The holiday entitlement for part-time members of staff (whether annual leave, closure days or public holidays) is pro-rated as appropriate. See Holiday for part-time staff.
The leave year is the calendar year. (If a Christmas closure day falls in January, this is deemed to be in the previous leave year for the purposes of pro rating annual leave, to ensure that each leave year has the same amount of holiday.)
Members of staff should seek approval from their line manager (or Head of Department etc.) before annual leave is taken. Usually it is expected that members of staff should give their line manager notice of at least twice the length of the period of leave to be taken. Operational reasons may necessitate that leave cannot be granted at the preferred time.
Annual leave accrues from the date of appointment throughout periods of paid service including paid leave.
Certain School duties attract an additional entitlement to annual leave, on the approval of Human Resources.
Up to five days leave may be carried over from one year to the next (pro rata for part-time staff). Agreement to carry over more than this is usually given only when there are strong personal reasons or when School business has prevented staff from taking leave.
Holiday entitlement during a member of staffs first leave year shall be calculated on a pro-rata basis to reflect their joining date. If a member of staff wishes to take unpaid leave to allow for arrangements made before joining the School, this can be agreed at the discretion of their line manager. See holiday for new starters.
Holiday entitlement will also be calculated on a pro-rata basis to reflect a member of staff's leaving date. An adjusting payment will be made in the final salary payment. Line managers will inform Human Resources of any outstanding untaken or overtaken leave. See holiday for leavers.
Reserved rights for ex-CRA staff
Members of staff who were assimilated to Bands 1-5 as a result of the implementation of the 2006 LSE Pay Framework Agreement, and who previously worked according to the standard School opening hours of 9.30am to 5.30pm during term time with an earlier closing time of 5pm during vacations with an unpaid one hour lunch or the equivalent number of hours if a shift pattern was worked may elect to retain their previous entitlement to annual leave (ie 20 days paid leave a year in addition to the days that the School is closed at Christmas, Easter and public holidays, rising in accordance with length of continuous service to 21 days after five years service, 22 days after seven years service and 23 days after 12 years service) while continuing also to work a 7 hour day during term time (excluding 1 hour unpaid lunch break) and a 6.5 hour day during vacation (excluding 1 hour unpaid lunch break) or the equivalent number of hours if a shift pattern is worked. Working hours and leave entitlements for part-time workers are pro rated as appropriate.
Affected members of staff were asked to elect to remain on their previous annual leave and working hours terms and conditions or transfer to the new ones at the time of the implementation of the 2006 Pay Framework. Members of staff may choose to transfer to the new standard terms and conditions (ie 25 days' annual leave but working 7 hours a day throughout the year) by giving one term's notice to their line manager, but they may not then revert to their old terms and conditions.
Public holidays and School closure days
The School is officially closed for the eight English public holidays which are:
- New Year's Day*
- Good Friday
- Easter Monday
- May Day (first Monday in May)
- Spring Bank Holiday (last Monday in May)
- Summer Bank Holiday (last Monday in August)
- Christmas Day*
- Boxing Day*
(* If these days fall at a weekend, a public holiday is granted on a weekday instead.)
The School is also officially closed for Easter and Christmas as follows:
- Easter - in addition to the public holidays, the School is closed on the Thursday before and the Tuesday and Wednesday after Easter
- Christmas - in addition to the public holidays, the School is closed for the three weekdays which fall between Christmas and New Year, and the two weekdays prior to Christmas; except when Christmas Day falls on a Thursday, when the School is closed for Christmas Eve, the three weekdays which fall between Christmas and New Year and Friday 2 January.
For exact dates see Public holidays and School closure days 2006-2012.
Some departments and residences operate services throughout the bank holiday and closure periods according to operational demands. Staff working these days are compensated through time off in lieu or overtime pay, according to the School's overtime policy.
The holiday entitlement for part-time members of staff (whether annual leave, closure days or public holidays) is pro-rated as appropriate.
As most English public holidays fall on a Monday, part-time staff who, for example, don't work Mondays need to be compensated with additional annual leave to make up for the public holidays they miss. Conversely part-time staff who normally work Mondays will receive slightly less annual leave to make up for their over-allocation public holidays.
The following calculator works out how much annual leave and how many closure days or public holidays are due to part-time members of staff and then increases or decreases their annual leave to take account of the closure days and public holidays they are over- or underdue according to their working pattern and the days of the week on which public holidays and closure days fall in 2007.

(NB part-time staff who have a work pattern of 5 days a week where the same number of hours are worked each day may can count their leave in the same way as full-time staff if they wish. For example, if someone has a 25 hour a week working pattern, 5 hours a day 5 days a week, they are can still count their leave as 25 days a year, but each day would of course be their normal 5 hours. Where a more complicated pattern is worked, eg less than 5 days a week or variable hours each day, then managers and staff are advised to account for leave in hours.)
Holiday for new starters in their first leave year is pro-rated for the period between their first day of appointment and the last day of the leave year.

Hourly-paid staff
Hourly-paid staff are paid holiday hours in additional to those actually worked, in proportion to the holiday allowance (annual leave, bank holidays and School closure days) of salaried staff. Hourly-paid staff generally work part-time and, according to the terms of their contract, holiday hours are generally taken in the same month as they are accrued, and payment is made for holiday hours at the same time as payment is made for hours actually worked.
