All you need to know about registration with a NHS GP
Welcome to the registration home page!
At St Philips we have devised a simple guide for easy access to your local NHS Medical Centre. Please find the headings into which you fit below and follow the instructions for (hopefully) stress free registration.
REMEMBER: PLEASE DON'T WAIT UNTIL YOU GET ILL! |
I am a UK Citizen
It is strongly recommended that you register with your local medical centre whilst at University, even if you already have a doctor in the UK. If you return home at weekends or during the holidays you can be seen by your previous doctor as a 'temporary resident' - it all depends on where (in the UK) you will spend more than 50 % of your time. You can always re-register with your previous doctor if you return home permanently.
Please check if you can register by looking at our practice area map below.
I have never lived in the UK
You need to register with a Medical Centre in order to obtain a National Health Service (NHS) number. This allows you to:
- Receive full NHS medical services whilst you are resident in the UK
-
NHS medical care is free and available throughout the UK to those who are resident in the UK for a period of six months or more.

Please check if you can register by looking at our practice area map below.
I did live in the UK and was registered with a doctor here once upon a time but now live abroad
You should already hold a National Heath Service (NHS) number. You are strongly recommended to register with your local medical centre to receive full NHS services.
Please check if you can register by looking at our practice area map below.
Practice area map

(The reason why where you live affects which medical centre you can register with ultimately derives from a) the geographical factors that have shaped how London is organised from an administrative basis and b) rules (drawn up in 1949) which governing registration of patients with doctors).
If you live within our practice area, or you live in any LSE halls of residents (except Silverwalk) you can register with us. Please go to the section ' I can register' to continue.
If you do not live within our practice area you cannot register. Please go to the section 'Help! I can't register' for assistance registering with a GP in your local area.
Step 1
Go to www.spmc.info and complete the registration form. Please ensure that you fill in all the fields and provide the information that is required .
Step 2
You will receive confirmation of your application by e-mail and details of how to arrange a short five minute appointment to come in to the medical centre to meet a nurse and sign your form . This appointment is booked on line - you do not have to come in ....yet !
Step 3
A nurse will give you a brief medical examination. This will include simple things such as measuring your blood pressure and weight. She can also issue you with free condoms and be able to answer any questions you may have.
Step 4!
You have now successfully registered. Congratulations! Your medical card (this card formally shows that you are entitled to receive NHS medical care, just in case anybody asks) will be sent to your university address. It may take some time (snail mail). Please be patient! If you change your address please let the health centre know a.s.a.p.
Help! I can't register at St Philips
So, you are unable to register with St Philips. Do not despair! This easy guide will help you register with a medical centre near you. Just follow these simple guidelines,
Remember even if you are not entitled to be a "registered patient" at St Philips Medical Centre you can still access the services that we provide if you experience symptoms whilst you are within the LSE campus or at one of the LSE halls of residence or if you have any health related query. Any student can access the contraceptive clinics, osteopath etc. If in doubt just come in and ask or contact us in the usual ways.
Registering with a medical centre where you live
To find out where your local medical centres are go to http://www.nhs.uk/root/localnhsservices/default.asp. Select 'GP surgeries' and enter your postcode in the boxes provided.
Contact or go along to your local medical centre to find out how to register with them.
Contacting a PCT
If your local centre tells you that they are not able to register you (for example their list of patients is 'full') the do not worry! You are legally entitled to be registered with a GP somewhere in your local area.
If this happens you will need to contact your local Primary Care Trust (PCT). The PCT is the organisation that runs all the medical centres in your area.
A PCT can oblige a medical centre to register you even if their list is 'full'.
You will need to contact your PCT to register with your local GP.
