Fee Status Classification
The Education (Fees and Awards) (England) Regulations 2007 govern the definition of ‘home’ (UK/EU) and ‘overseas’ students for the purpose of fees. These regulations enable individual institutions to classify the fee status of students. The onus is on individual students to satisfy the institution that they meet the criteria to be classified as home status for the purpose of fees. We make the final decision on whether you are a home UK, home EU, or overseas student, based on the facts that you provide. It is important to give us all the information that is required to make the correct fee assessment. Only certain categories of students will be charged the ‘home’ fee. These are given below in general terms:
Home UK students In order to qualify as a home UK student, you must meet all of the following criteria:
- You must be ‘settled’ in the UK and Islands (the Islands means Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) on the ‘first day of the first academic year of the course’
AND
- You must also have been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK for the full three year period before the ‘first day of the first academic year of the course’
AND
- The main purpose for your residence in the UK and Islands must not have been to receive full-time education during any part of this three year period. For the LSE the ‘first day of an academic year of the course’ is 1 September.
The following categories of students may also qualify for the ‘home’ fee:
- Refugees (recognised by the UK government) and their spouses/civil partners and children; and
- Persons who applied for asylum and as a result have been granted Exceptional Leave, Humanitarian Protection or Discretionary Leave, and their families.
Home EU students In order to qualify as a home EU student, you must meet all of the following criteria:
- On the first day of an academic year of the course you must be a national of an EU country, or the ‘relevant family member’ of such a national
AND
- You must have been ordinarily resident in the European Economic Area and/or Switzerland for the three years before the first day of the first academic year of the course
AND
- The main purpose for your residence in the EEA must not have been to receive fulltime education during any part of that three year period.
The following may also qualify for the ‘home’ EU fee:
- EEA and Swiss workers, their spouses, civil partners and children in the UK who have been resident in the EEA or Switzerland for three years.
- Turkish worker ( Child of)
The following factors are not in themselves sufficient to warrant a ‘home’ fee classification:
- Possession of EU nationality
- Ownership of property in the EEA
- Employment within the area
- Payment of taxes.
The above is only a very brief summary. For more detailed information, and to see whether you fall into any of these, or any other category, please refer to the UKCISA website at www.ukcisa.org.uk. Re-consideration of fee status If you are a postgraduate applicant, and believe that the School should reconsider your fee status, you must to write to us before you arrive, and have a definite answer from us before you register. We reserve the right to review your offer of admission and the award of any financial aid if your fee status changes.
If you are a registered student, you should be aware that your fee status will only be reclassified in exceptional circumstances (either a change in the law or a change to the status of the student).
If you think you have been classified wrongly please complete our fee classification questionnaire and send it with any supporting documentation to:
