Staff guide to writing references
At some point it is likely that you will be asked by employers to supply references for students that you have taught or for whom you are a personal tutor. There are points of good practice which it will be helpful for you to be aware of, primarily in order to be fair and transparent towards the student but also to avoid any potential litigation due to negligence in the writing of a reference.
This guide will give you some background as to why employers use references, and idea of what a reference looks like and what it might contain, a list of do's and don'ts and finally some further resources. Download guide as PDF: Staff guide to writing references
Graduate destinations
Each year the Careers Service collects details for HESA about what the students from your course have gone on to do after leaving LSE. This data is supplied to schools and departments in the college. The information is a compulsory requirement of the QAA subject review and can be useful not only in keeping in touch with alumni but also in marketing your course to prospective students.
Careers education and employability
The Careers Service produces a programme of events each term which is distributed to staff and students. It contains a number of activities, some of which give the students a chance to meet employers and some which are led by Careers Service staff. The Careers Service also offers departmental talks and workshops tailored to your students on a range of topics such as:
- CVs and application forms
- What do graduates in this discipline do?
- What skills do employers look for when recruiting?
- Career management skills
- The graduate labour market today
- Successful interviews
- Aptitude tests and assessment centres
- Postgraduate study and funding
Employability skills sessions can also be incorporated into your department's skill development programme
Departmental seminars
Each department at LSE has an allocated Careers Adviser who liases with the department to arrange appropriate careers seminars and events. These complement the programme of events at the Careers Service and are more tailored to your degree subject. Departmental talks are advertised on department notice boards or by email to individual students.
