Frequently asked questions for new and prospective students

When can I start using the LSE Careers Service?

You are eligible to use the LSE Careers Service as soon as you have registered as a student; for most students, this will be in Freshers' week at the end of September.  We must give priority to current students, so we are unable to offer detailed careers advice to prospective students or offer holders.  If you are in London, you are welcome to visit the Careers Service and if you have a careers question which isn't answered in this section of the website, please do email us careers@lse.ac.uk

My LSE username and password isn't working

If you have just received your LSE username and password, you may find that you can't yet access the My Careers Service section of our website.  It may take a little while for your password to be activated. Please be patient!  You will be able to log in shortly.  Events are not listed on My Careers Service until late September and booking for events takes place one week before the event takes place, so you won't miss out.

My Careers Service is a database, owned by the Careers Service which allows students to search for vacancies, book for careers events and book appointments with a careers adviser.  The system works by importing data from the Student Records System (SITS) at LSE. This import happens in phases throughout September.   If you have particular concerns or further questions, please contact us at: careers@lse.ac.uk or 020 7955 7135.  Please note, IT Service are not able to help with issues relating to My Careers Service.

I want a part time job!

The Careers Service's JobShop is dedicated to sourcing part time and vacation vacancies suitable for LSE students. You can search these vacancies via My Careers Service when you have registered.  Most on-campus jobs, including those at the Careers Service will be advertised near the start of term, so keep checking My Careers Service and the Careers Service homepage for details.  Jobs on-campus are limited and always popular, so consider alternatives off-campus as well. See Careers websites for ideas.

Can you tell me about my job prospects?

We can show you the jobs that previous students from your department at LSE have pursued after graduation and we can suggest the transferable skills your study will help you to develop, see Graduate Destinations and What do LSE graduates do?

We're here to help you learn the life-long skills to empower you to obtain the career you want. When you have registered at LSE, we can help you analyse your skills, learn how to write outstanding CVs and application forms and perfect your interview technique.  The job you get when you leave LSE will depend entirely on you, your applications, your skills, your experience and your suitability for your chosen job. Make sure you make good use of the Careers Service while you're here.

Will I get a visa or be able to find work in the UK after I've completed my study at LSE?

There are no 'general rules' to work permits so we can't offer advice about how easy it will be, generally, for you to gain a work permit when you have graduated. It's very important that you keep informed of the current visa regulations by reading the relevant websites. We've put together a list of useful information and websites in the Visas and work permits section.

Where can I look for work?

My Careers Service contains an online vacancy board, exclusive to LSE where you can search online for internships, graduate programmes and full time work and internships, part time, voluntary and casual work. We also stock free, take away guides in the Careers Service which list graduate recruitment schemes and application details; come and pick up your copies at the start of the Michaelmas term.  There are lots of graduate recruitment websites that list recruitment programmes and current vacancies. See Careers websites for a list of some of the most well known sites.

Where can I find out about events the Careers Service are organising?

All our LSE Careers Service events are exclusive to LSE students. Information about the events we run is available in the Careers advice and events section on the Careers Service website and there is an events calendar, where you can get full events details and book you place on My Careers Service. Also, check for details in the annual Careers Service Brochure, which you can collect from the Careers Service at the start of Michaelmas term.

When are the careers fairs?

Take a look at the Careers Service brochure for a full list of fair and forum dates.  For more information about fairs, forums and events at LSE, see the Careers advice and events section on the Careers Service website (for registered students only).

Where can I find application deadline dates?

We produce lists of deadlines dates for companies with internship and graduate recruitment schemes and these will be published on the relevant sector-area of the Careers Service website in late-September.  Keep checking the webpages for the sectors in which you are interested nearer the time - see Careers Sectors.

Are you open during holidays?

Yes. The careers information library is open as normal during holidays.  The School does close for a short time during the Easter and Christmas holidays and we will be closed during these times. Details of closures are always posted on the Careers Service homepage.
