In 2007, the Korea Foundation and the LSE signed an Agreement to establish and operate the Korea Foundation- London School of Economics and Political Science Academic Exchange Programme at the Asia Research Centre of the LSE.  Funded for three years initially through the generosity of the Korea Foundation, this programme aims to facilitate social science research on Korea and the understanding of Korea in the context of Asia and the wider world. This new programme will be formally launched at the start of academic year 2008/09 with the inaugural Public Lecture for the Korea Foundation - LSE Academic Exchange Programme  on 14 October 2008. Professor Ha-joon Chang of the University of Cambridge will speak on Economic Agendas in a Global Context: Reflections on the Role of Korea.

Academic Exchange

This Programme will enable researchers from LSE and the UK to visit Korea as well as allow researchers from Korea to visit LSE each year. The Asia Research Centre will coordinate the visit of one Fellow from LSE during 2008/09 to pursue their research at a relevant institution in Korea. In the event that we are unable to select a researcher from LSE, the Fellowship will be widened to other UK universities for participation. The Fellow from the UK shall be placed with a host research or policy institution in Korea.

One Fellow from Korea will be selected to pursue their research at the LSE and will be hosted in the Asia Research Centre at the LSE.  While housed in the Asia Research Centre, the Korea Fellow will work with academics and doctoral students across the LSE to enjoy the stimulating academic community that encourages an interdisciplinary and cross cultural network.  They will be active not only in ARC seminars and activities, but are expected to participate in programs across the broader LSE community.

Individuals eligible for Fellowships will include post-doctoral researchers, early to mid-career practitioners, and professors of all grades in the field of social sciences. Fellows will engage in research and scholarship on Korea as well as Korea-related issues within an international context. Fellows will be required to have an appropriate working knowledge of the host-country language.

The Programme Fellowships for the Academic Year 2008/09 has passed. The Fellow candidates coming to LSE from Korea have been short listed and successful candidates will be notified by early September. LSE candidates to go to Korea are currently being shortlisted.
