Asia Research Centre
The primary purpose of the Asia Research Centre (ARC) is to raise the profile of scholarly study of Asia within the School. The Centre is inter-departmental and has the particular object of encouraging and coordinating inter-disciplinary social science research relating to Asia. The Centre works to facilitate interchange between academic research, policy making and intellectual engagement with businesses with an interest in Asia.
Recognising the importance of Asia, two former Directors of the School, Dr John Ashworth and Dr IG Patel; and Professor Nicholas Stern, during his time as Chief Economist of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and Visiting Professor of Economics at the School, conceived the idea of setting up the Asia Research Centre (ARC) at the LSE. The Asia Research Centre was set up in 1997 with Michael Leifer as the first Director and is currently Chaired by Professor Lord Stern. The Director of LSE, Sir Howard Davies is actively involved with China and the Chinese banking system.
