How to donate money for arts and music events at LSE
If you are interested in donating funds to promote arts and musical events at the School, or would like to support a specific project, please contact Richard Hylton at arts@lse.ac.uk
Procedure for the receipt of donations
Money donated to LSE is money held on trust until the donors wishes are carried out. All philanthropic donations to the School, whatever their source or purpose, should be recorded by the Office of Development to ensure that:
- cheques or cash are recorded accurately in a monies received ledger by two staff members, to protect against the donation being mislaid or stolen;
- the donation is recorded accurately in the School's Advance database against a correctly identified entity record for the donor;
- the purpose of the donation and any future payment schedules are recorded and the funds directed to a designated internal account from which the intended recipient will be able to spend or in other ways receive the funds;
- the donation is paid into LSE donations bank account, a subsidiary account to the School's main account where it is held until identified accurately and transferred to the Schools main account;
- the donation is acknowledged appropriately by LSE, particularly those donations of £1000 and over which must be acknowledged by the Director of the School;
- in the case of donations from UK taxpayers, Gift Aid, worth an extra 28% to LSE, is collected from the Inland Revenue and applied to the correct account;
- further School procedures, such as the scholarship approval process, are carried out;
- agreement on recognition for the donor is recorded and becomes part of the system of stewardship; for donations over £5000 there should be a gift agreement written in conjunction with the Office of Development & Alumni Relations;
- the gift is recorded correctly in the accounts of the Campaign for LSE and the School as a whole.
Departments outside the Office of Development and Alumni Relations (ODAR) which receive donations for whatever reason should send the payments to the Donations Administrator in ODAR for banking and recording , along with the name and address details of the donor and the purpose of the gift. If funds have been banked through the Schools main account then full details of currency, amount and date received should be given to ODAR to enable identification.
These procedures do not apply to research grants from philanthropic sources which are normally handled by the Research and Project Development Division. RPDD will inform ODAR of the details after processing the grant. ^
