Funding for your PhD

Below you will find information and deadlines on some of the sources of scholarships and other awards for students intending to apply for a PhD at LSE in 2006/07. This is not an exhaustive list, but it should give you an idea of some of the sources of funding available for PhD students.

ESRC Quota Studentship Awards

The Department has received an allocation of 8 quota awards in the recent ESRC recognition exercise. Further details on these awards, eligibility and information on how to apply is available on the ESRC website. The deadline for applications for the quota awards is usually around May of each year – but check the website for up-to-date deadline information. You must already be in receipt of an offer for a place on a PhD programme before making your application.  Details of the ESRC awards for Accounting can be found on the ESRC Studentships in Accounting webpage.

Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)
ESRC Research Studentships are available to UK/EU students either applying for, or studying on the first year of a PhD programme. There are two main types of studentships, +3 (for three year research programmes), and 1+3 students applying to taught PhD programmes that incorporate a Master's degree (e.g. MSc Finance and Economics (Research)). Overseas Research Students Awards 2007/08

Deadline for application forms and references: 23 February 2007

The Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme (ORS Awards) was set up by the Secretary of State for Education and Science in 1979 to provide awards for partial remission of tuition fees to overseas research students of outstanding merit and research potential. Applications are invited from overseas students intending to register as full-time students for an MPhil/PhD degree at the LSE in October 2006.

The School considers all applications it receives and can offer a number of awards to students who can satisfy the ORS Committee of their academic ability and research potential.

Vincent Cheng Scholarship

Applications must reach the Graduate Admissions office by 24 February 2006

Four Vincent Cheng Scholarships are offered for postgraduate research study at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) for the academic year 2006/07. The four scholarships are open to students from Hong Kong and Mainland China. Each scholarship will provide three years fees and maintenance support and are tenable only at the LSE.

The Vincent Cheng Scholarships will be awarded to candidates of outstanding academic merit. Scholars are asked to give an undertaking to return to their home countries on completion of their period at LSE and to provide a clear statement of the work they intend to pursue. The Donor may also wish to speak with successful applicants concerning their career aspirations when they return home.

The value of the scholarships will vary depending on the financial circumstances of the successful candidates. However, for 2005/06 recipients the amount available was up to £22,000 towards fees and maintenance expenses.

Dorothy Hogkin Postgraduate Awards

There are three scholarships to be awarded during 2007/08. Each scholarship is a full award cover tuition fees and living costs. The scholarship can be renewed for three to four years of study.

LSE Research Studentship Scheme

Application deadline: 15 June 2007.

All MRes/MPhil/PhD students who receive an offer of admission by 31 May 2007 will be automatically invited to apply for the LSE Research Studentship scheme. If you are made an offer of admission for an MPhil/PhD programme, the application form will be made available to you on the Graduate Admissions web tracking system
