 Research programmes
The Department of Accounting offers a PhD programme.
Applications are invited from students who have a broad interest in accounting and forms of economic calculation within but not limited to the following research areas:
- Management accounting and organisational control, including governance, performance measurement and incentive compensation
- Financial accounting, reporting and disclosure, including accounting regulation, analysis and valuation
- Auditing, governance and risk management
- Accounting and public policy, including the study of accounting professions and institutions and their histories
Past PhD graduates have obtained academic positions at Harvard Business School, Saïd Business School (Oxford), University of North Carolina Chapel-Hill and Warwick Business School among other placements.
Applications for a PhD in Accounting can be made online or by mail through LSE's Graduate Admissions Office.
Slides from the PhD Accounting information session are available here.
In addition to the doctoral programme, the Department offers a Visiting Research Students programme in accounting for doctoral and post doctoral students at other universities. The intention is to allow students pursuing research at other institutions to attend courses and benefit from the expertise of the LSE faculty. To benefit those participating in the programme, intake numbers are kept low. Visiting Research Students will normally visit the LSE for one term, and will be formally registered with the Graduate School. They will have all the usual entitlements accorded to full-time doctoral students. Visiting Research Students, however, are expected to be self-funded. (The application procedure is to apply for the MPhil/PhD but to use the application code for visiting status - N4EA - Visiting Research Student in Accounting.)
