Induction: new academic staff
LSE offers a comprehensive series of induction events for new academic faculty. This includes a general welcome to the School, sessions relevant to teaching, research, administrative responsibilities, and career progression advice. The programme starts each September, with a five-day series of briefings and workshops. There are also some sessions later in the year.
New members of staff should receive a formal invitation to these events from the Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC), but are welcome to contact us. Attendance at the induction programme is compulsory for all new academic staff with teaching responsibilities who have less than three years' higher education (HE) teaching experience (or equivalent) and/or formal training in teaching in HE.
Following on from induction, we encourage new staff to continue their academic development. There are a variety of additional central events (see Central events programme), opportunities for one-to-one development work, funding for external events, small grants (for which a formal application is required) for personal and teaching development, and access to a variety of resources. You are also welcome to register for the Higher Education Academy accredited LSE Teacher Accreditation Programme.
Teaching induction for graduate teaching assistants and guest teachers
LSE requires all new graduate teaching assistants and guest teachers (where appropriate) to undertake training in class teaching prior to or soon after appointment, particularly if they have no prior HE teaching experience or training. A number of events are organised for the start of the academic year, and at the start of the Lent term. New teachers should receive a formal invitation to these events from TLC. However please contact us for further details (tlc@lse.ac.uk).
Following on from induction, teachers are welcome to develop their skills further through our central events programme and one-to-one support, and can apply for the LSE Teaching Record and the LSE Teacher Accreditation Programme, which is accredited by the Higher Education Academy.
Induction for researchers
Researchers are invited to the relevant workshops in the induction for new full time academic staff. All new researchers will also be invited to attend a specific induction workshop. See the Induction page in the Contract Research Staff section of the LSE website for further details and other opportunities for research staff.
Convener induction briefing
TLC coordinates a briefing session for new conveners, usually in July each year. It includes planning; finance; human resources (HR) issues; health and safety; and teaching matters. New directors of research centres may also find elements of the day helpful. For further details please contact us at tlc@lse.ac.uk. ^
