Sarah Bailey, Central Induction Champion & Special Projects Co-ordinator

 Part time: Normally in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays 

Sarah joined the LSE in April 2003 as a member of the Student Services Centre's Advice and Reception team, having previously worked in Manchester as a Product Developer for a fine art greetings card company and as a Production Manager for a large art agency. On moving to London in 1998, Sarah worked as an part-time Art Agent and freelance Arts Trainer for local Arts Boards around the country and in 2001 she started working in Further Education as an Advice and Guidance Officer for the Westminster Kingsway College Language School in Soho.

Sarah works part-time in the SDU in the role of Central Induction Champion, the rest of her time being spent working as a member of the Student Services Advice and Reception team, coordinating the LSE Student Mentoring Scheme, editing the New Arrivals website and coordinating School Induction activities for all new LSE students.

Chris Connelley, Head of the LSE Staff Development Unit

Chris set up the Staff Development Unit on his arrival at LSE in January 1998 and has headed up the team ever since.

Prior to coming here, he worked in a wide range of continuing learning roles, to include staff development adviser and head of a materials production team at the University of East London, open learning expert based at Ford Motor Company’s Dagenham Plant and employment adviser and youth worker for a London borough.

Over 10 years of SDU, he is most proud of the high take up figures for staff development at LSE, the pioneering employee development and assistance programme, Learn for You and collaborative events like the LSE street fayre and Investors in People.

His major interests include

• encouraging learning in all work areas, and making it accessible to all staff groups
• bringing on leadership skills
• generating service excellence in all areas

Chris has just finished a stint as joint Chair of the London Staff Developers Group ( 2006-2008) and is a Fellow of both the Institute of Training and Organisational Learning and the Royal Society of Arts.

Alison Cumpsty, Staff Development Consultant

Part-time:  Normally in the office on Tuesdays

Alison joined the Staff Development Unit in June 2007 and works one day each week for us.

Alison has over twenty years of experience in the training and development field. Before setting up her own consultancy in 1995, she was Head of Training Services for a London Borough where she worked on major organisational initiatives and provided internal consultancy service to staff. In 1995 she set up her own consultancy and since then she has developed and run a range of programmes throughout the public and private sector. These include government agencies, local authorities, NHS trusts, universities, galleries and museums, a telecommunications company and an airline company.

Alison has always believed that coaching has a vital place in employee development. She and her team offer a full coaching service to organisations, and regularly train managers to become coaches.Over the years, she has brought together a team of excellent trainers, coaches and HR consultants based in London and across the UK who have sound background in organisational development and consultancy. Together the team has worked on major, successful organisational projects.

Alison has taught on DMS courses and the CIPD Employee Development Modules at the University of North London (now London Metropolitan University) and on the Post Graduate Diploma for Ford personnel staff at the University of East London.

On a final note, Alison has a degree in English Literature from the University of Warwick, is a member of the CIPD, has a counselling qualification from the Westminster Pastoral Foundation and a Diploma in Leadership Mentoring and Executive Coaching (Level 5) from the Institute of Leadership and Management.

Claire Hackshall, Staff Development Programmes & Funding Manager

Part-time:  In the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays

Claire's background is in business events organisation and she has worked for a wide range of professional bodies, private organisations and charities in this capacity.

Claire organises, co-ordinates and publicises the SDU's hugely diverse training and development programme. The Unit runs several hundred events for LSE staff each year, covering certificated programmes, customised workshops, one, two and half-day courses, briefings, specific themed activities, team awaydays and events involving Investor in People Assessments. Claire's other main responsibilities include budget management and website management.

Jackie Kernaghan, Staff Development Consultant

Part-time:  Normally in the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays

Jackie Kernaghan Jackie joined the LSE in December 2001, having previously worked in the publishing, automotive, further education and voluntary sectors in management and Staff Development roles.

Jackie works as a part-time Staff Development Consultant for the LSE as well as working as a freelance Development Consultant.

Since joining the School, Jackie has:

  • Managed the implementation of the LSE Coaching Academy which provides LSE managers with access to quality assured performance coaching.

  • Provided IiP advice and guidance and is an IiP champion for the HR division

  • Facilitated a number of team development activities e.g. HR Division (strategy and process review), IT Services (core competency development), Graduate Admissions (customer services), Press Office (team building).

  • Worked as a member of the LSE Coaching Academy

Jackie is a Graduate Member of the CIPD, currently in the process of applying for Corporate Membership, and is qualified in a range of psychometric recruitment and development tools.

Sara Talbi, Staff Development Unit Assistant

Sara joined the Staff Development Unit in July 2007, having previously worked in LSE's Student Service Centre. Sara graduated from Greenwich University in July 2006 in Media Culture and Communication.

Sara is responsible for taking all the bookings for SDU events, sending out joining instructions, booking catering and AV requirements, and for carrying out the administration of the Learn for You Scheme, amongst many other things!
