Article on the constraints faced by Angola's burgeoning civil society sector. The period leading up to the first multiparty elections, in 1992, spurred a flurry of political activity, with the appearance of new parties, civil society organisations (CSOs) and independent media outlets. However, the operation of these new political, civil and media entities has been marred by all sorts of constraints resulting in their limited effectiveness, to a point where the opposition can be characterised, as it was in an article recently appeared in the New York Times, as weak and co-opted.
