Staff Council

Talents needed to help shape the Staff Consultative Council

We are looking for volunteers to help us negotiate an Information and Consultation Agreement with staff which we hope will lead to the formation of LSE's first Staff Consultative Council.

Members of staff are needed to join the negotiating team to agree how this new School body would work in terms of membership, frequency of meetings and issues identified. The hope is that the Staff Consultative Council will provide an opportunity for improved communication within the School, and a formal consultative body for staff.

How to apply

It is important that the negotiating team is fully representative of all staff groups at all levels within the School. If you a member of front line service staff (ie. catering, portering, maintainance) or an academic and are interested in being considered please complete the following brief  application form  and return it to Chris Connelley, c.connelley@lse.ac.uk by 12:00 on 27 November 2006. The form invites you to explain why you would like to join the negotiating team, and what you can bring in terms of experience and expertise.

Prior experience of formal negotiating is not required. We are looking for group members who can put forward constructive and positive ideas and who are prepared to both represent the views of a particular staff group and keep that group informed of developments. We expect the negotiation team discussions to take place in a spirit of cooperation and partnership in order to achieve the best possible outcome.

We will ask an external expert from the Work Foundation who is familiar with information and consultation agreements and the formation of staff councils, to advise us on the best representative selection for the negotiating team.

Please note that the work of the negotiating team is intended to happen in advance of the Staff Council being formed and if you do apply, does not commit you to stand as a staff councillor.

What time and commitment is involved?

Being a member of the negotiating team will be considered as making a contribution to the School. We would expect managers, if feasible, to support your absence from the workplace while we discuss the agreement. There will be around three to four meetings over the next two months, between one and two hours long per session.
