Academic Visitors and Fellowship Opportunities

See Who's Who for list of individual academic visitors to the Centre.

Fellowship Opportunities

Through the Department of Social Policy, the Centre for Civil Society offers a limited number of Visiting Fellowships to senior academics with proven excellence for short to longer periods of up to one year. Senior professionals, who wish to undertake a defined piece of reflective, policy-oriented research, are also welcome to visit the Centre. Visiting fellows may be on leave from their organisations or sponsored by other organisations. Visiting fellows are expected to play an active role in the intellectual life of the Centre.

To apply for a Visiting Fellowship, applicants should submit a brief outline of the work planned for their proposed visit (maximum two pages), including purpose of visit, research question, methodology, and expected output, with a CV, list of publications and approximate dates they would like to visit to ccs@lse.ac.uk.

The Centre will consider applications for Visiting Fellowships three times a year.  The relevant deadlines are as follows:

  • 1st March for Fellowships starting during or after the following Summer Term
  • 1st June for Fellowships starting during or after the following Michaelmas (Autumn) term
  • 1st November for Fellowships starting during or after the following Lent (Spring) Term

All applications are reviewed internally by CCS members.

The Centre for Civil Society is unable to provide Visiting Fellows with a stipend, but can provide access to library facilities and the intellectual and social life of the LSE. Shared desk space can sometimes be arranged. The Centre may call upon Visiting Fellows to give an occasional seminar to postgraduate students and researchers. Applicants should note that staff and researchers at the Centre, and LSE, are likely to be away outside term times, undertaking their own research.

The Centre cannot normally provide administrative support to Visitors whilst they are at LSE.

Informal academic visitors

We are occasionally able to invite senior academics and professionals to visit the Centre on an informal basis for periods of up to four weeks. In this case, facilities provided would be more limited but the application procedure and our expectations would be similar to those wishing to apply for formal LSE Visitor status.

Other visitors

The number of Centre staff is limited. If you wish to make an appointment with an individual staff member to discuss a particular issue please contact them directly or email: ccs@lse.ac.uk outlining the purpose of your visit.
