Allocations
IT Services administers a number of resource allocations: for h: space
allocation or email quota, students should go to the
IT Help
Desk on the Library First Floor. Staff should consult their
user
support team. For IT equipment budget
allocations, staff should also contact their
user
support team.
ALUMNI - All queries regarding the Alumni email accounts should be directed to
the Office of Development and Alumni relations.
In the first instance you are asked to look at
http://www.lse.ac.uk/collections/alumniRelations/ for an introduction and guide to the services. Most
questions can be answered here and if you are still having difficulty you will
be able to contact the department directly on 020 7955 6412.
Amplification
Various rooms have existing speech reinforcement systems. Some rooms require an
additional microphone, others have built-in systems. Portable equipment can be
provided, but please check availability. All systems should be pre-booked, and
portable equipment requires collection and return to the
Teaching and Learning Spaces
team.
Apreso (aka Lecture Capture)
Lectures in the Old Theatre, New Theatre, U8 and Hong Kong Theatre can be
digitally recorded and published online for access to LSE students or staff via
our innovative Apreso recording system. LSE has won a coveted UCISA Award for
Excellence for this project to "develop an integrated, scalable cost effective
video lecture capture and podcasting service"

Audio recording
Hand-held recording devices can be supplied to record lectures or special
events. One set of batteries and a tape are usually supplied with each machine.
Some of the larger lecture theatres have recording facilities, but this service
must be booked in advance through the
Teaching and Learning Spaces
team.
AV Equipment
Bookings for AV equipment and services can be made online, using the Teaching
and Learning Spaces AV Unit
Online request form. Enquiries and
bookings are also accepted by telephone 020 7955 7437, email (click
here) or by visiting the AV Unit in Room H810 (please contact us first by phone to ensure someone is there to
receive you).

Backups
Files held on central fileserver computers, which the user sees as "h: space",
are regularly backed up to provide protection against system failure or loss of
files. The system is not designed to guarantee recovery of files accidentally
deleted by users. However, it is often possible to restore such files, if the
accident is discovered quickly enough.

Briefing online
This is the online staff electronic newsletter distributed every other Thursday
during term time. It is distributed as an email message with a link to a web
page. This is not maintained by IT Services but by the
Press Office, whom you
should contact if you want to contribute to it or to add yourself to the mailing
list to receive it.

Colour printing
There is a high quality HP Colour LaserJet Printer available to staff and
students holding a LSE photocopying card in C120 print room and also in the
Library Lower Ground Floor.

Computer classrooms
The computer classrooms are all located in the St Clements
Building and you are welcome to use the PCs in there whenever the room is not
being used for teaching. Locations and opening hours of all public access PCs

on the plasma information screens around campus to locate a free PC.

Corioscan converters
These are used in conjunction with TV sets in rooms without data projectors
(beams), to project the computer image. These are slowly being phased out as
more rooms have data projectors installed.

Training and support for creating and using databases is available from several
different sources within the School.

Data projectors
The majority of classrooms now have dedicated video/data projectors, linked to
the lecturers PC desk. These are either controlled by a switch/button on the
teaching desk, or by the "projector control" program on the PC desktop (only
available once you are logged onto the PC).

Duplication
Audio and video tape duplication is available on request. Audio tapes can be
copied at fast speed, without significant loss of quality. Videotapes can only
be copied in "real time", so please allow sufficient time for us to duplicate
the tapes for you. Please note that we do not copy Open University Programmes or
copyright protected material without explicit written permission from the
copyright holder.

Flipcharts
We now supply disposable flipchart pads and easels, which are available for
collection from the Teaching and Learning Spaces office in H810. These are desk mounted easels, with adhesive strips,
enabling you to tear off pages, and attach to the walls without damaging the
decor (please contact us first by phone to ensure someone is there to receive
you).

Laptops
The Teaching and Learning Spaces Team has a limited number of laptops available for short term loans to staff, in
rooms without a PC available. We do not allow laptops to be taken off campus.
All come pre-installed with Microsoft XP and Microsoft Office. Other
applications can be installed if we have a site licence, and it is possible for
us to do so.

Laser pointers
The Teaching and Learning Spaces Team can loan these to staff.
These need to be collected and returned to the office in H810 - we may require positive
identification, and may charge for non-return, or damage.

Library catalogue terminals
These 'OPAC' terminals are maintained by the Library IT Support team and not by
IT Services. Faults should be reported to the Library IT Support staff.

Login box
This is the small grey box which appears on your screen when you first logon to
your computer. Messages need to be both urgent and significant to the LSE
community - and also brief. This facility is not maintained by IT Services but
by the Press Office.

Microphones
Microphones are installed as standard within the lecture theatres. Wireless
microphones are also available on request in most theatres. A clip-on microphone
tends to be least intrusive, whereas hand held's are perfect for question and
answer sessions.

OHPs
Overhead projectors are maintained and supplied to teaching rooms by the
Teaching and Learning Spaces Team. They are available in 250W and 400W versions. We can always supply a
replacement OHP lamp, as long as it's identical to the ones that we use, in our
teaching room stock. All of the current OHPs have two lamps.

We have around 1000 PCs in open access computer areas, computer

Personal web pages
This facility, available to all staff and students, allows the publication on
the Web of material for academic and related purposes but which is not relevant
to either the LSE website nor the School’s virtual learning environment, WebCT.

Scanning
There are two public scanners, one in C120 print room and one in the Library,
which are free to use. Instructions on how to use it are attached to the
scanner, but any additional help should be sought from the
IT Help Desk (for

Slide projectors
We
are now phasing these machines out of service as and when they fail. Limited
rooms still contain these machines, but once they fail, will not be replaced.
Should you have 35mm slides that you still need to show, we can convert these to
digital images, and import them into PowerPoint for you. Please
email us if you require this service.

Teaching room faults
For any IT faults with the PCs or projectors in teaching rooms (e.g. H106, S75)
please contact the Teaching and Learning Spaces Dept. on #6300. This team
is also responsible for all aspects of the computer classrooms (i.e. on the
first floor and basement of St Clements) and lecture theatres. Its remit is
essentially all teaching and learning areas on campus and in the halls.

Toners
Toners are no longer provided by IT Services. If members of staff need a new
printer toner they should ask their Departmental Administrator/Secretary. If a

Virtual Assistance is a remote support tool used by the support teams to assist

Visualiser
These are available in most theatres and selected tower classrooms. They allow
the projection of paper and acetates, increasing the materials available to
teaching, and reducing the need to recreate materials from other sources.
