Information on how to build a website

Introduction:

In order to create a website you need to create the webpages on a computer with whichever software you choose, then upload them (with the same or another piece of software) to webspace held on a remote computer by a webspace provider (such as the LSE). The links below can help you find a webspace provider and the software you need, and give advice on how to design a good website.

Register for your webspace:

  • LSE provides 50 mb of personal webspace for all staff and students. Details of Terms and Conditions and how to register and set up your space are found in the Personal Web Pages IT Guides (LSE logon and password required).
  • Alternatively, most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) offer some free webspace, so if you already have a non-LSE email address, check with your provider to see what they offer.
  • Or check out Webhosting Talk Forum - for recommendations on budget webspace hosters and a webhosting FAQ .

Software you might need:

Free web-building software
  • MS Frontpage 2003 is available on the computers in Rooms D708, Q1 and Q103. There are training courses provided free by LSE IT Training Services, plus several guides to Frontpage 2003 you can print off or read online (LSE login and password required).
  • Frontpage Express
basic free web-building software, used to be part of the Microsoft Internet Explorer package.
  • Web Weaver EZ
a free, user-friendly web page editor for Windows
  • IMS Web Dwarf
another free WYSIWYG web page editor including FTP facility
  • You can also convert Microsoft Word pages directly to webpages (although this can produce ugly and unwieldy pages). Select File > Save as Web Page. Alternatively Word provides some webpage templates to be found under File > New > Webpages.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Software

  • SmartFTP
Software to upload your website to your webspace.  SmartFTP is free for educational or personal use.  You do not need this if you are using MS Frontpage software as this has its own 'publishing' facility. You will NOT need this software if you are using your LSE Personal Webspace allocation as there is no need to upload.
