ESRC 1+3 or +3 Research Studentship funding through the Department of International Relations, LSE For 2009/10 entry, the IR Department has been allocated one ESRC 1+3 quota award and has leave to submit one nominee to the ESRC's 1+3 or +3 'Open Competition'. For eligible UK/EU applicants only 1. For those without an MSc degree, who wish to take an MSc course followed by a research degree and would be interested in 1+3 quota award or 'Open Competition' funding: To be considered for nomination for the quota award or for the ESRC's 'Open Competition' for 1+3 funding you need to apply for the MSc International Relations Research or MSc International Political Economy Research, indicate on your application form that you wish to be considered for 1+3 funding, and include a research proposal along with the rest of the required application documentation. (Instructions for preparing a research proposal can be found on LSE application form.) For 2009 entry, we recommend that you apply early and definitely no later than 2 February 2009. The Department will select the students it wishes to nominate for ESRC 1+3 funding from amongst those who have been accepted to the two 'research track' Masters courses. Students will be notified in the spring (most likely by the middle of March) and will be asked at that stage for any further information needed for the application process. MSc students who are awarded ESRC 1+3 Research Studentships are entitled to continue to the PhD, without reapplication, if they pass the MSc to the required standard. Please do not complete a 1+3 ESRC Research Studentship application unless you have been asked to do so by the Department. 2. For those with an MSc degree that has not been recognised by the ESRC as including research training, or expect to have such a degree by the end of the current academic year, and who wish to be considered for ESRC quota award or 'Open Competition' funding: Applicants who already hold a Masters degree that has not been recognised by the ESRC as including research training, and who wish to be considered for ESRC quota award or 'Open Competition' funding, must apply for the 1+3 as noted in Section 1 above. Please see separate FAQs for the MSc International Relations and MSc International Political Economy. 3.
