As the 1999 Reith Lecturer the then director of the London School of Economics and Political Science spoke to
audiences around the world on the theme of globalisation. The lectures were
delivered from major cities around the world, locating the lectures themselves
within the cultural variety of the world across which they were broadcast. The
audience participated through question and answer sessions after the lectures,
and via e-mail as a 'Runaway World' debate developed with the lecture series as
it moved around the world. The Runaway World debate was unique because of the
public and global dialogue that the contribution from its audience
achieved.
