civil society in iraq

A major current project in Iraq explores the role of civil society in reconstruction and its relation to violence. Members of the Centre for the Study of Global Governance visited Iraq four times since November 2003, met with a wide range of activists, academics, intellectuals and policy makers. The project has organised a number of debates on issues of violence and reconstruction. Most recently the Centre organized a meeting of 20 Iraqis from different backgrounds on political participation which culminated in a proposal to establish an Iraqi Civic Forum. The meeting was held in Cairo in cooperation with the Al Ahram Centre for Strategic Studies. Findings from this project have been submitted to the Prime Minster’s Office, the Ministry of Defence, The Foreign Affairs and International Development Committees of Parliament. They have been presented at relevant conferences at Chatham House, Wilton Park and IPPR and are widely covered in British and international media. The Centre has just received funding from the Open Society Institute for a project about civil society involvement in managing Iraq’s oil revenues. This will be carried out in co-operation with the universities of Basra, Baghdad, and Kirkuk.
