middle east research
The Centre's research on the Middle East currently comprises five
projects:
iraq revenue watch (IRW)
In 2006, Open Society Institute's Iraq Revenue Watch, became a partnership of the new Revenue Watch Institute and the Centre for the Study of Global Governance at the London School of Economics. It is engaged in research, capacity building and advocacy on governance in the petroleum sector and public finance with a particular focus on revenue transparency and anti-corruption
legitimate violence
The Centre for the Study of Global Governance is building up a collaboration with Cairo University around global
civil society. A seminar on legitimate
violence in Western and Islamic traditions is planned.
israel & palestine
In 2003 the Centre for the Study of Global Governance organised a conference of Israeli and Palestinian
peace activists at the height of the second intifada. The
conference led to the establishment of the People’s Voice,
which, along with the Geneva Initiative, has had a
considerable influence on the resumption of the peace
process. A report on peace movements in Israel and Palestine,
stemming from the conference, was published as a discussion
paper.
civil society in iraq
A major current project in Iraq explores the role of civil
society in reconstruction and its relation to violence.
Members of the Centre for the Study of Global Governance visited Iraq four times since November 2003, met with a
wide range of activists, academics, intellectuals and policy
makers. The project has organised a number of debates on
issues of violence and reconstruction. Most recently the Centre
organized a meeting of 20 Iraqis from different backgrounds on
political participation which culminated in a proposal to
establish an Iraqi Civic Forum. The meeting was held in Cairo
in cooperation with the Al Ahram Centre for Strategic Studies.
Findings from this project have been submitted to the
Prime Minster’s Office, the Ministry of Defence, The Foreign
Affairs and International Development Committees of Parliament.
They have been presented at relevant conferences at Chatham
House, Wilton Park and IPPR and are widely covered in British
and international media. The Centre has just received funding from
the Open Society Institute for a project about civil society
involvement in managing Iraq’s oil revenues. This will be
carried out in co-operation with the universities of Basra,
Baghdad, and Kirkuk.
the community of energy, water and evironment
'The Community of Energy, Water and Environment' is a project towards an integrated system of governance for energy, water
and environment in the Mediterranean region of the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. It was initiated by HRH Prince bin Tallal of

The project aims at identifying and finding options for an integrated trans-boundary system of governance in teh areas of energy,
water and environment inside and between the regions of the Middle East, North Africa and Europe.
A brainstorming meeting took place on 15 July 2005 at Europeaische Akademie, Berlin, Germany.
