CENTRE RESOURCES
:

The CREFSA Library
The CREFSA Library is a collection of research materials on South and Southern Africa.  It has been built up as a result of research projects undertaken at CREFSA and also through contact with organisations such as central banks, government departments, financial institutions and academic institutions.

References on South Africa include, for example, official publications from the South African Reserve Bank and the National Treasury as well as journals and papers from a range of academic and policy institutions.  Official publications from central banks in Southern Africa are also part of the collection, together with regional studies such as the African Development Bank's Economic Integration in Southern Africa, from the 1999 study Private Capital Flows to Africa.  Publications from specialist information services are also available (for example Africa Financing Review and the Facts and Reports series, dating from 1970 to 1995).  A further category of materials covers publications from international institutions.

In addition to its role as a vital resource for research staff at CREFSA, the Library acts as a useful complement to the LSE's Library (the British Library of Political and Economic Science) for participants in CREFSA's visitor programme.   Here, the library offers visitors materials specific to South and Southern Africa, while the BLPES offers an impressive range of international resources.

The Library is open (by appointment) to researchers from government or academic institutions.  For further details, please contact Lynne Thomas.

The Bethlehem Collection
In 1998, the Centre was approached by the family of the Professor Ronald Bethlehem - a distinguished South African economist - who wished to donate his extensive collection of economic literature to an academic institution.  CREFSA was pleased to accept this generous gift and established The Bethlehem Collection as part of the CREFSA Library in 1999.

The Bethlehem Collection consists of books and other material on South Africa spanning the history of the country, the economic pressures of isolation, the political transition and the economic transition still underway.  The Collection also holds Professor Bethlehem's papers, stemming from his own research as an academic and private-sector economist and his involvement in a range of South African business and policy institutions.  Professor Bethlehem was an active participant in economic policy debates in South Africa and his papers provide a fascinating perspective on the politics of the economic transition in South Africa.

Access to the Collection is by appointment only - please contact  Lynne Thomas.
